Pfizer drug gets FDA approval for expanded usage

03/08/07 - newratings.com

NEW YORK, March 8 (newratings.com) – The US Food & Drug Administration (FDA) has approved the expanded use of Pfizer Inc’s (PFE) cholesterol lowering drug Lipitor, the pharmaceutical giant announced on Wednesday.

Pfizer mentioned that the expanded label for Lipitor will include the drug’s approval for use in reducing the risks of certain types of heart surgery, hospitalization for heart failure, and chest pain in patients with heart disease. The expanded approvals were given after considering the results of a five-year study of 10,000 patients with heart disease and elevated levels of LDL, or bad cholesterol, comparing the impact of various doses of Lipitor.
