EU extends Microsoft deadline for compliance

NEW YORK, March 27 (newratings.com) – Microsoft Corp (MSFT) has been given more time by European Union (EU) antitrust regulators to prove that it is complying with a requirement to fairly license its server software communications protocols to rivals, an EU spokesperson said on Monday.
The European Commission (EC) has extended the deadline for Microsoft to respond to the charges from April 3 to April 23. The EC has threatened to begin levying daily fines of $4 million, if the software giant fails to meet EU demands. The regulators had ordered Microsoft in 2004 to share communications code with rival companies after a probe found that the company was withholding information that would enable non-Microsoft servers to achieve full interoperability with Windows PCs and servers.
